RYAN AGONCILLO realized that his TV5 show “Talentadong Pinoy” has attracted a loyal audience when strangers started stopping him on the streets, asking if they could audition.

“From the crazies to the genuinely gifted,” Ryan told Rushes’ Bayani San Diego Jr.

The show has gathered a motley crew, including a beat-box trio, a man who peels coconuts with his teeth, snake wranglers and contortionists.

While Ryan was car-racing in Clark, Pampanga, an Aeta kid stood in his way and belted R&B tunes.

Talent scouting is part of his job as host—quite a stretch from his first gig on ABC 5’s “Philippine Idol.”

Every week, Ryan explained, the show is guaranteed to discover talents that are either awe-inspiring or amusing.

Among the most shocking so far was a blade eater. “While I was interviewing him, I could smell and see blood,” Ryan recalled. “Maybe he got nervous. But he wasn’t seriously hurt.”

Such unexpected moments make the show a roller-coaster ride for audiences and show regulars (aside from Ryan) Audie Gemora, Cherie Gil, John Lapus, Eugene Domingo and Amy Perez, among others, who are also called “Talent Scouts.”

“I thought they would be jaded,” Ryan said. “After all, they’ve been in the business for so long. Still, they are truly entertained. Amy once asked a Talentado, ‘Can I hire you for my son’s birthday party?’”

Indeed, some Talentados have been spotted by booking agents and clinched assignments through the program.

Has Ryan found a singer for his forthcoming wedding to Judy Ann Santos? He laughed and said Judai herself has singled out a ventriloquist with five dummies.

Judai acted as a Talent Scout for Ryan’s birthday special, to be aired April 18 (he turned 30 on April 10.)

Will the ventriloquist be at their wedding? Abangan.

Last week I was given a schedule to join...contestants are given 1.5 minutes to impress the judges and jurors. The judges will decide if they will buzz you out during your performance while the jurors will decide on the winner.

The night before the 8am taping...I told the coordinator that I am not joining anymore because of some profesional concerns...naturally, the coordinator got upset and since I don't want any troubles, I ended up being at the studio a few minutes before 8am the ff morning. I had my old suit with me and Nicolo...plus Don Dominador which I was planning to use for the interview which they did not allow. No props in the interview pala... :)

There were 8 contestants...I was the 8th. During the contest, yung iba na buzz out so I prayed na hwag lang ako ma buzz out happy na ako...then I won! Then I had to face the defending champion, a fantastic balancer named Brian. Napaka humble at mabait...and of course very talented. Masaya na nga ako hwag lang ma-buzz out tapos nanalo pa sa elimination...imagine how happy I was when I won over the defending champion. :)

Now the problem...the next episode needed to be recorded the same day. I had no extra clothes with me so I mixed and matched a shirt and the suit...and although it did not appear to be much different, it was better than wearing exactly the same outfit for an episode which will be aired a week after the 1st.

Then the act...thank God I brought Don Dominador. He awed the crowd, jurors and judges. Actually both Nicolo and Dom charmed the crowd. One of the judges, Ms Amy Perez even asked Nicolo to be in her kid's party and told Nicolo "You only...don't bring Wanlu!"

It was an unexpected win...and will hopefully be a pleasant surprise to my wife and kids...

...TIL NOW MY WIFE DOES NOT KNOW I WON. WHEN I GOT HOME, I TOLD HER I LOST AND GAVE HER THE P5,000 CONSOLATION PRIZE FOR THE NON WINNERS... BUT I TOLD HER THAT SHE MUST WATCH THE AIRING ON MARCH 14 DESPITE THE LOST BECAUSE I GREETED HER ON TV AND SHE LOVES HEARING HER NAME MENTIONED ON TV...agugulat yun! :)

The first time I was at the Araneta Coliseum as a performer on stage was when Don Dominador greeted Ms Ai Ai Delas Alas a happy birthday...in that same concert, I sliced Ms Ai Ai into half :)

Last night, I was back at the Big Dome in a concert by and for broadcasters. UNTV Channel 37 headed by Kuya Daniel Razon and Mr Jay Sonza organized this prestigous concert dubbed as "Test Broadcast 2" to honor awardees from tv and radio broadcast medium.

The mouth mechanism of each figure is so smooth...I have tried a lot of figures in the past two years, Selberg, Mack-Marshall, Poyner, Payes, Schrum, Detweiler, Croes, Barry, and Carcamo but these are the best so far.

I finally had the time to read a nice book given to me by Bob Ladd. The book "Memoirs of a Ventriloquist" was written by John Schaibley, the original owner of my 1919 Mack figure. Very interesting stories linking my Mack to his early vaudeville years.

My sons Gabby and Eli as well as my wife Debbie had a great time watching TV, swimming, going shopping in the nearby Mall... :)

Private Training: MuayThai

Okay I confess...I usually glue myslef in front of either the computer or the DVD player. I have gym affiliations but I find it so difficult to get out of the house and go to the gym...to call me a couch potato is an understatement.

But I needed to burn some calories and the best way I know is MUAYTHAI...so I called my MuayThai instructor from the MuayThai Assn of the Philippines (MAP) and we started doing home training last Tuesday with some very light training. Today we stepped up a notch and I just love it...

So for those of you who want to have MuayThai training in the comfort and privacy of your own home...let me know so I can ask someone from the National MuayThai Training Center in ULTRA to help you.

Your place does not have to be big...check out my photos. We just moved some of the furnitures and bwalah...our own MuayThai training gym... :)

I bought this RARE 1919 MACK-MARSHALL figure.

It feels so cool owning a piece of vent history :)

I call him Mackoy Franks as a tribute to some great people...Theodore Mack, Charlie Mack, Frank Marshall and my dad, Col Enrique T. Lunaria who served under the Marcos regime for decades as a Colonel in the Air Force. My dad served as the Group Commander for Basa Air Base under Wing Commander, General Aquino.

This beautiful example from the shop of Theodore Mack & Son, Charlie Mack, dates to circa 1919 and was owned by noted vaudeville vent, John Schaibley a.k.a. Johnny Raymond. This was one of John's back up heads to his main Mack figure, "Woody." Charlie McCarthy came out of the Mack shop, and the beautiful example offered here has that classic "Mack look" that made the Macks the most sought after carvers of their day! Many of the great figure makers that followed, including Alex Cameron, Ken Spencer, and Frank Marshall, all learned their craft working in Charlie Mack's shop!

In addition to the standard moving mouth and turning head, this figure is also equipped with a right eye winker and a cryer.

Another feature which makes this figure particularly collectable, is that it was repainted and wigged by Frank Marshall. Frank's business card is still tacked inside the head along with handwritten notes most probably to record the repairs done on this figure:

This figure was obtained from the collection of noted vent and vent historian, Bob Isaacson. Mr Isaacson noted that Mr Schaibley had 3 figures. The first one was made by Charlie Mack and the rest, including this one were made by Frank Marshall himself. Mr Marshall was employed by the Macks and although this head was made by FFrank Marshall, it is still a Mack head because it came out of the Mack shop. Thus making it a MACK-MARSHALL.

Mr Schaibley confirms this in his book "Memoirs of a Ventriloquist."

Page 9/1918 "The figure with one winking eye cost, I believe, $27. although I had other figures made, I used that figure all the time of my professional span of fourty years. I used the spare heads only when the 1918 figure was in the shop for an overhaul. Charlie Mack figures are still considered among the finest."

Page130/1923 "I left Ruth Ann in Chicago but took Frank Marshall, the man who made the ventriloquial figures with me."

Since this was a back-up head used in vaudeville by John Schaibley in 1919-1922 when his original 1918 "Woody" is in the Mack shop for an overhaul, it did not come with an original Mack body. Nonetheless, the body it has was made by two of the greatest vent figures of all time. The body is by Foy E. Brown, and has the "rocking clavicle" feature, allowing the figure to look down at the first row of the audience. The hands are carved wood in the Mack style by Conrad Hartz.

Notice the picture of Mr Schaibley with this figure taken in May 1920 in Chicago. The date matches the repair dates in the figure's head and again the story in Mr Schaibley's book.

"The girl took my name and I gave her a set of photos and on the back was my stage name Johhny J. Raymond, vaudeville's youngest ventriloquist. My pictures were impressive."

Oh by the way...it was a whopping US$3,000. It proves that toys for the big boys are not exactly cheap!!! Not to forget the peculiar irony of "dolls" for boys...

Gonzo and Santiago did the opening spiel for the puppet episode of "The Sweet Life" with Wilma Doesnt and Lucy Torres Gomez. This will be aired on June 25- 6pm at QTV Channel 11.

Beside me is my pal Sam Fuentes who is one of the best puppet makers in Manila. On my lap is my Kem Poyner figure, Nicolo.

Ventrillusion Act for the Gordons

I had a nice time performing for the Gordons yesterday in Subic. The party was for the 7th birthday celebration of Liam Gordon, the son of Bryan and Nikki Gordon.

Bryan just like me is a Yaw-Yan, MuayThai and BJJ fan who studied Yaw-Yan under Sir Henry Kobayashi and Sir Emiliano Zapata. He is now training MuayThai under MAP and BJJ under Machado.

The picture above features the very friendly Senator Dick Gordon and his very lovely and amiable wife Kate. The proud grandparents of Liam. :)
